THE EASIEST DIY SCRUB EVER
When I make a DIY beauty product, I have three criteria it must meet:
1. The ingredients must be easy to find
2. It needs to be uncomplicated
3. It actually needs to WORK so that I can see results
I can proudly say that this DIY checks all the boxes! Made out of 2 ingredients you probably already have in your house (sugar and olive oil) it exfoliates, moisturizes, and your skin will feel amazing afterwards!
WHY OLIVE OIL?
High in antioxidants, olive oil can prevent signs of premature aging on the skin. It contains the fat soluble vitamins E, A, and D, as well as Omega-3 fatty acids. Olive oil has antibacterial properties, and is a great simple oil to moisturize, nourish, and soften both skin and hair. I would recommend getting the purest organic cold pressed olive oil you can find. But the wonderful thing is you can probably find a great quality olive oil that is reasonably priced right on the shelf of your local grocery store. One of my favorites is this olive oil here.
Sugar is a natural humectant and draws moisture from the environment into your skin. Living in the high desert, my skin needs all the moisture it can get! Sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid, allowing for cell turnover. This results in fresher looking skin, with a healthy glow. Using sugar as a physical exfoliant helps remove the top layer of dead skin, softens the skin, unclogs pores, and may aid in clearing black heads, blemishes and breakouts. I also really like sugar because it it better for sensitive skin. Sugar granules dissolve easily in hot water and are less drying than salt, for example. You can use any sugar you like, but again a high quality organic brown or raw sugar are my picks.
Combining sugar and olive oil together keeps the skin freshly exfoliated, nourished and moisturized! The winning trifecta, if I do say so myself. Skin always looks better and younger when it has all three components going for it.
Ok, this is easy, here’s what you’ll need:
1 cup sugar (I used organic raw sugar)
1/4 organic cold pressed olive oil
A few drops of your favorite essential oil (optional fancy ingredient)
a glass container that can be resealed
Combine the sugar, olive oil, and essential oil (if using) in your resealable glass container and close. Use as desired in the shower as often as feels good to your skin. Scrub in gentle circular motions all over the body, and rinse with warm water. Your skin will feel fresh and moisturized when you get out of the shower. Be careful as your shower floor may be a little slippery from the oil. Depending on your climate, you may not need to use additional moisturizer afterwards which can be a added timesaver bonus.
This lasts for quite a while depending on how often you use it. Just to give you a point of reference, this amount lasts me about 3 to 4 uses applied all over my body. Feel free to half the recipe, or double it. Also, this is a really cheap gift idea to give to friends for a little pampering session.
I use this on my body, but if you’d like to try it on your face, its safe for that too. Just use light pressure to exfoliate the delicate facial skin. You’ll know pretty much right away if you want to use it on your face or not.
